October is National Protect Your Hearing Month

Did you know that exposure to noise levels over 85 dB can cause hearing loss? Not sure what 85 dB means, exactly? A chainsaw can emit up to 100 dB of noise and a jackhammer reaches up to 130 dB.

Occupational hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses in the United States. According to the CDC, each year, about “22 million U.S. workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels at work. Over 30 million U.S. workers are exposed to chemicals, some of which are harmful to the ear (ototoxic) and hazardous to hearing. In addition to damaging workers’ quality of life, occupational hearing loss carries a high economic price to society.”

October is National Protect Your Hearing Month and what better way to practice health and safety than by using proper PPE while on the job.

Types of PPE to protect your hearing include:

  • Disposable foam plugs
  • Molded ear plugs
  • Noise-canceling ear plugs
  • Ear muffs

OSHA’s 10-Hour General Industry Training Course not only covers proper PPE for protecting your hearing, but a range of general safety awareness protocols and measures designed to give entry-level workers in various industries a basic set of guidelines for workplace safety.
